Aftermarket Camcorder Batteries and Chargers

I have used "aftermarket" batteries in a few different items without any problems, but.... Now for the 2nd "shoe" the "aftermarket" chargers...I was about to order a charger for my Canon Elura 100 for about $20 and decided to look on the Canon site, they charge $75....if I measure the output voltage and it is correct...whats the problem EXPLODING BATTERY ?I think that if the voltage is correct to start, it shouldn't change. I don't leave the charger on once the battery is fully charged.
That is an incorrect assumption. When charging almost all batteries the voltage will rise while charging as the internal resistance of the battery increases. Also the design of the charger may affect the no load voltage as some chargers vary their output as the battery reaches a peak voltage, some also charge with pulses rather than a DC voltage. Lithium Ion batteries (Li-Ion) can be sensitive to charging, discharging and temperature effects and usually have an integrated circuit to monitor battery conditions which some include monitoring the battery temperature. Most also have vents to reduce pressure in the event they get too hot. Since the construction, the materials and the circuitry in Li-Ion battery packs can be expensive some of the cheaper brands may not offer the protection.
Those Li-Ion batteries which catch fire are a very small percentage and usually the only problems people seem to have with "after-market" batteries is they don't work, don't power the device long enough or are outdated so their life span may be short.
