I have a new Sony DCR-TRV720, I bought a battery from ebay that is a compatible not original sony. It is rated 4300mah and 7.4V, battery part number NP-F530 The sony equivalent should be 4200mah and 7.2V. I think the increase in mah will mean the battery lasts longer but Im worried that the increase in voltage could cause harm to my new camcorder. I wish now that Id spent more on the sony battery but as I havent, does anyone please have any advice as to if this battery would do any harm and what the increased voltage could mean to me.

There are a variety of chemical compositions used in Lithium-Ion batteries which the manufacturers try to keep to themselves. This may affect the open circuit voltage. Most camcorders are typically rated for 7.2 Volts to 7.9 Volts DC. It is common to see 7.2 and 7.4. Lithium-Ion batteries can be sensitive to charging, discharging and temperature effects so Sony has included an integrated circuit to monitor battery conditions and has trademarked the packs as "InfoLITHIUM". The battery pack communicates with the camera. So some generic batteries will not work.
